The $_SERVER variables have values related to the server, including the domain name, the path to the page, and the page name itself. Here’s a brief summary on these values:

I have a word doc that I formatted great with pictures and everything but I need the html code for all that to enter into the craigslist ad for a rental property listing… How do I do all this or is there another program I should be using?

Word allows you to save as an html or html filtered file. Just open it again and select the right Options from the "Save As" selection window.

Your layout maynot look the same except in IE as Word and other so-called products that can save files as html insert Microsoft Schema code which no other browser except IE/Maxthon understands.

Microsoft does make a free cleaner, but you may have to go in and do some hand coding afterwards.

I have an image that’s about 500px wide that I’ve scaled down to about 100px wide.

A part of the image is a newspaper. After scaling it more or less looks blurred. The overall images is a fan arrangement of magazines/newspapers.

Any tips or tricks on this, mateys?

This is the nature of raster graphics (which I can safely assume you’re dealing with). The more you reduce an image’s dimensions by scaling the image, the fewer pixels there are available to render the details of the image. The best you can do in this case without getting too deep is to apply a Sharpen filter. I prefer using Unsharp Mask because it gives greater control over the results.

There are a a lot of challenges associated with the starting a small web design shop – (especially targeting small business!) My experience with design work for small business is that they expect a lot for their money, and they don’t always understand that the time it takes for you to explain something to them and help them understand the web is time that you need to be making money.

The nonprofit industry on the other hand can be quite lively and it is not unusual for large nonprofits to need design work regularly. Doing work for an established nonprofit that has a marketing budget is a completely different story. Of course, to get that kind of work requires a lot of work because you have to prove to them that you can deliver. We respond to RFPs from nonprofits all the time and sometimes it takes 10 – 12 hours just to complete the proposal.

The answer to your question is really yes, there is plenty of need for design despite people using self publishing and templates.

But more importantly, the business can be very tough and you need to be well networked and have processes that work. (Including your business development process!)
